Cement, mining firms conduct 'Operation Tuli'

SAN FERNANDO, Cebu (July 1) -- Young boys at the threshhold of their adolescence in a mountain community in San Fernando got circumcised as Taiheiyo Cement Philippines Inc. (TCPI) and Solid Earth Development Corp. (SEDC) brought them some doctors to "bring them to manhood."

At least 47 boys "earned their ticket to manhood" during the "Operation Tuli" that TCPI and SEDC conducted in Barangay Tonggo at the barangay health center located at the ground level of the barangay hall last May 19.

The activity led by Dr. Ildebrando Estella, who heads the TCPI medical department, was first of two phases of a medical mission both firms pursued as part of their joint Social Development and Management Program (SDMP).

Felix Balasabas, Tonggo barangay captain, welcomed the team and supported the initiative by mobilizing his barangay health workers in gathering and documenting with TCPI and SEDC community relations officers the boys who needed to be circumcised.

He said he was pleased of the initiative TCPI and SEDC took for them. "Being located behind the (TCPI) cement plant has always been a blessing for us," he declared.

Esther P. Cola, the new SEDC administration department manager, personally oversaw and managed the flow during the circumcision activity. She thought it was a fulfilling task to accomplish over and above her professional duties.
